Wellness programs that let you live your personal best

What creates a culture of senior wellness? The mind and spirit need joy, laughter and mental stimulation. The body needs to move to stay healthy and strong. That’s why whole-person, multi-dimensional wellness is a way of life at Westminster-Canterbury of the Blue Ridge retirement community.

Senior fitness options and personalized care

We offer an array of activities, classes and instructors qualified in the disciplines of fitness and proactive senior wellness. We have an on-site clinic with a board-certified geriatrician affiliated with UVA, or a geriatric nurse practitioner on duty five days a week.

They can perform essential health checks and coordinate the services of general practitioners, dermatologists, podiatrists, audiologists, or other specialty physicians as needed.

The region’s foremost fitness and aquatics senior health program

Offering more than 45 fitness classes per week, tiered at intensity levels ranging from beginner to expert, the Fitness & Aquatic Center is more than equal to any local health club. In many ways, it’s a better choice for seniors.

Our fitness equipment includes elliptical machines, treadmills and seated stair machines. For resistance training, we have pneumatic machines with no pins, plates or collars. The Center has an indoor walking track, and our exercise and lap pools are both saltwater kept at welcoming temperatures. Residents receive four complimentary personal training visits every six months and can arrange to see a trainer more frequently if desired.

Our team is certified by nationally recognized bodies in personal training and group exercise. We use standard fitness testing for older adults. We also hold senior fitness and specialty certifications that help us understand the types of exercises and regimens that are most comfortable for seniors. One group class, for example, is modeled on the research-based Otogo balance program that people generally experience in physical therapy.
