Dr. Thomas “Brad” Murray, a Charlottesville native, says he is “thrilled” to have joined the Westminster Canterbury of the Blue Ridge team as our new Medical Director.
He arrived to WCBR in January, when he joined as Assistant Professor on the University of Virginia Medical School faculty. He will be seeing residents in the clinic regularly as well as doing rounds in healthcare five days a week. In his rounds at WCBR, he will sometimes be accompanied by medical students and residents from
UVA – including fourth-year medical students familiarizing with geriatrics, and some will be fellows from the Geriatric Psychiatry Program.
Some of our residents and associates will remember his grandparents, Jim and Bunny Murray, who were here for a time and, as Dr. Murray recalls, “counted many friends among the residents.” He is one of their 23 grandchildren, a son of one of their eight sons – the late Dr. Latham Murray, who was a surgeon at Martha Jefferson Hospital.
After he was born here, Dr. Murray’s family moved away from Charlottesville for a time. The family returned in 1996 and he graduated from Albemarle High School in 1997.
Dr. Murray comes to us from Eastern Shore Rural Health System in Onancock, where he was also the Medical Director of a CCRC. He underwent his medical training at Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) in Norfolk, graduating in 2011. He completed his internal medicine residency and geriatric fellowship there as well. He is board-certified in internal and geriatric medicine.
He has served at EVMS and VCU Medical Schools and has also worked as a hospitalist at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Hampton. His clinical interests include healthy aging, treating common non-operative orthopedic ailments, wound care, and memory care.
Dr Murray is excited about his new responsibilities at WCBR, and our plans for the future – including hiring a new nurse practitioner to help with medical care on our campus.
He and his wife, herself a pediatrician, are looking forward to raising a new generation of Murrays here. Their fourth child was born on New Year’s Eve, and the others are now 1, 3 and 6 years old.
